In Episode two of Tony Talks, Tony shares three tips any goalkeeper coach could use in the field. We encourage you to write some of these down and use them to improve your game!
Develop your non dominant foot ASAP
"Number one, develop as early as possible your goalkeeper's ability to play and use their non dominant foot. With the way that in possession is so prevalent in the game now, it's very important that your goalkeeper can play with both feet. So as young as you possibly can, encourage them to work with both feet, makes it a lot more, uh, positive for them, gives them so many more options when they receive the ball, but also it makes it difficult for the opposition when they're trying to press the goalkeeper."
Integrate practice with the group
" Number two, integrate your goalkeeper into practice with the group as often as you possibly can. This is where those relationships and that trust is built. Try not to be too possessive over your goalkeeper when you want to do isolated work with them, because obviously this is part of their integration into the group and the team when you're going into games. But they're not ours, they're not our goalkeepers, they belong to the team."
A good coach is a good listener
"Number three, and the final top tip on this episode, coaches, be a good listener. Okay. And that's not necessarily to listen, to respond. And as you've seen in tonight's episode or today's episode, very important that you listen, take the knowledge and information on board and be prepared to be open minded, be a good listener."
